Chapter Twenty-Two

Levi vibrated in the center of a sonic boom. The bowl shape of the courtyard deflected the displaced air upward, and the wind generated sucked Levi’s hair and clothing toward the sky. He opened his eyes to find Non sitting comfortably inside a prismatic sphere of energy, casually floating a few feet off the ground.

His skin prickled and he felt scales forming all over his body. His gauntlet expanded to his forearm, then up over his arm, and onto his shoulder. Boots formed around his feet and climbed to his thighs. His mask expanded and encased his head in armor, then traveled down his neck and over his torso. Levi shifted and found himself encased in a full covering of scaled armor that flexed to his will. The armor was a deep red, though patches of purple and black emphasized it in areas. Only his silver hand remained unchanged; then, with a demand of his mind, Levi drew the armor back into himself. Even his scaled gauntlet vanished.

He rolled his shoulders… and finally squinted at the realization that without his mask, he was still nearsighted. He reached into the pocket of his coat and drew his glasses out. Once they were on, he found Non grinning at him.

“Hah, told you it was no problem! Maybe now you’ll listen to me more often,” she stated. The woman radiated a smug arrogance that had Levi snorting in amusement.

“Probably not. Every time I pay too much attention to you, you try to tell me the proper way to have sex with my fiancées. Or how to dress with more panache. I am a grown man, despite your opinion on things.” Levi didn’t want to admit he didn’t know what the hell panache was.

She let out a cackle and dropped to her feet. Her cane caused a thunk to sound as she ground it into the broken stone. “The young never know what they’re missing. You’ll come around in a few centuries.”

Levi rolled his eyes and took in the arena around him. The energy he’d displaced had caused most of the stone to crack and splinter. He felt shards of flat rock under his feet, and it took him a moment to confirm that none of the damage had spread past the arena walls. This spot went from being a training yard to a bowl of broken shale… and all it took was a flex of my power. It was a sobering thought. His essence flowed constantly through his body like a crimson ocean. The crystalized center of his power remained in his ring, yet his entire body hummed with power.

“I’m going to try transforming,” he warned her. He had no desire to accidentally step on the Queen and flatten her. She’d probably kick him over the trees in response. She disappeared, and then materialized well back from where he stood. With the knowledge that she was gone, he let himself relax into himself and called forth his draconic heritage.

His body dissolved into a blood-red mist and expanded.
